Often times, as family or friends of someone with an addiction, we forget that we need prayer too. We become consumed by our loved ones lifestyle and rarely stop to focus on our own self-care. We may pray night and day for our loved one, but we all need someone that is praying for us through what can be a very uncertain and trying time in our life. Have no fear! You've got a praying friend here!

A friend loves at all times. You are not alone. With God and your prayer warriors by your side - we will get through this.  A special prayer for you below.

Love,

Your Praying Friend

Let's Pray

Dear Heavenly Father,

We pray for all of the families around this world that are affected by addiction. The parents who watch their child struggle. The children who watch their parents suffer. The grandparents who have seen these cycles of behavior time and time again. God, we lift all of them up to you in prayer today. Provide them the strength they need to continue fighting this battle. Provide them peace and serenity, resting in your promises. Provide them eyes to see their loved one as you do - worthy. Reveal to them the role that they should play in assisting their loved one. Teach them to set healthy boundaries. We've heard it said that a parent who loves their child will correct their child. Help these families to not stand idly by or to enable their loved one, but to instead set firm guidelines grounded by the roots of Your Word. Lord, protect their hearts and minds that they do not become entangled in the lies and manipulation that often accompany addiction. We pray that you give them discernment, wisdom and guidance to maneuver their way through the uncertainty that addiction causes. Lord, thank you for your loving kindness, your friendship, your direction.

In Jesus Name,

Amen

Just for today

Dear Heavenly Father,

"Just for today" is a phrase we hear often in AA. Your word tells us that we should not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself - Matthew 6:34. Lord, help us to listen to your teachings. Help us to be present in each moment of today. Present with you. Just for today, help us to choose to follow you instead of the unfulfilling substitutes this world has to offer. Just for today, help us to see that You alone provide fulfillment and there is no substitute. Just for today, help us to trust in You and Your promises.

In Jesus Name,

Amen

For the hurting loved one

Dear Heavenly Father,

Today we lift up all those that are hurt by a loved one's addiction. At times the pain of watching someone you love continue harming themselves through drugs/alcohol is almost too much to bear. Lord, give them strength. Please remind them that they are not helpless in this situation, though it may feel as if it is out of their control. They can help by praying for their loved one, because every circumstance is within Your control.  We bring our worries, concerns, anxieties, fears, and restless thoughts to you, oh Lord. Please provide a peace that can only come from You. We lift our addicted loved one up to you, Father. We know that you are a sovereign God. We thank you for watching over our every move. Help us to continue to pray for our loved one and to continue seeking you for guidance. It it is your Holy presence where we find comfort and reassurance. We know that in all things God works for the good of those that love Him. We love you, Lord Jesus!

In Jesus Name,

Amen

Health and wellness

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for my health. I pray against illness and disease. I ask that you would heal any aliment that I may be struggling with now or in the future. I pray that you would provide protection over my physical, mental, emotional, financial and spiritual health. I graciously ask that you help me to not take my health for granted. Help me to stay active - both mentally and physically. Urge me to care for the body and mind you have gifted to me. If there are any unhealthy habits keeping me from caring for my mind and body, please expose those behaviors and help me to overcome them in Your Name.

In Jesus Name,

Amen

Challenge:

Think of one small goal. A goal so astronomically simple that it is impossible to fail. Then start by completing that goal every day for one week. Mark each day off on your calendar. The following week make that same goal slightly more difficult.

For example: I will walk in place for one minute. That goal is so simple. There is no way I can't accomplish that. The following week - 2 minutes. The following - week 5 minutes. This is about building consistency. The goal you choose is not nearly as important as ensuring you accomplish the goal. By marking off each day on your calendar you are creating a chain. DO NOT let the chain break. See how many days you can link in a row. If you miss one day, don't give up, but do not allow yourself to miss two days! Comment below about the goal you've chosen and keep us updated on your accomplishments!

Let's help one another brainstorm some goal ideas:

1. Write one paragraph a day
2. Read one page out of my Bible each morning
3. Add one vegetable to my plate each dinner meal
4. Write three things I'm grateful for every morning (see gratitude post)
5. Do one push up

Pro Tip: Create a SMART goal. SMART is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-Bound.

If my goal is to "get healthy" - That's a great goal! But my chances of accomplishing it are very small, because my goal does not include a plan. If I write my goal with the criteria mentioned above I am much more likely to accomplish it. How could I turn "get healthy" into a SMART goal?

"I will walk for 10 minutes every morning at 7 AM."

Now, that is a SMART goal! It's detailed (specific). I can measure the amount of time, it's attainable (not outrageous like committing to an hour every morning), it supports my overall goal of wanting to improve my health (relevant), and by stating the time that I will walk I have made it time-bound. Try it!
