Overcoming Addiction through the Power of Jesus ChristMeet Jessica Breedwell. Age:32 Location: Johnston City, Illinois Favorite Bible Verses: Matthew 28:20 and Luke 137 Jessica's Success StoryJessica's story started out rocky. Her parents were both addicts and she would travel back and forth between their homes. Neither home environment was especially stable. There were times when they didn't have running water or electricity. From an early age she witnessed fighting and violence at home. Much of her childhood she observed her parent's drug and alcohol use. In her teen years she turned to drugs and alcohol to help her cope with her own pain and problems. Ultimately, she was just trying to escape her depressing reality. She was searching for a way to forget all the hurt and hard feelings. Over the years she attempted to get sober several times. She even completed multiple 30 day programs, but none of them were successful. "I just wasn't ready"Jessica's alcohol and drug use continued into her young adult life. She started a family of her own, but after having her first child she began drinking heavily in an attempt to drown her problems. Unfortunately, that only made things worse. She got a DUI and lost her license. Wake UP CallShe thought this was the wake up call she needed. She entered another inpatient recovery program and was able to maintain sobriety for a significant amount of time following her graduation. But that wouldn't be the end of her addiction She began regularly using meth and her life dramatically spiraled downward. She was unemployed, in one unhealthy relationship after another, and homeless. She wasn't able to support her daughter. She felt herself failing. She married her abusive boyfriend and they added a second child to their family. Not long into their marriage her husband ended up going to prison and again she tried to clean up her life. "Somehow I still wasn't ready."Jessica knew she needed to get clean, but something was holding her back. Her life went on like this for years. Then one day out of the blue she called her mom and told her she was ready to get help. Her mother had been praying for her for a long time. Jessica's heart was softened and she was excited for a fresh start. "I was ready to be the mother my children deserved."This time felt different. Jessica entered inpatient rehab. By the grace of God she was paired with a Christian Counselor. "My counselor opened my eyes to God even more than I thought possible. She had faith in me. She believed in me, even when I didn't believe in myself. It was as if she was sent from God specifically to help me through this journey. She helped me trust in the power of prayer. She helped me realize I was worth it! She showed me that there is a better life waiting for me without drugs and alcohol. A life filled with freedom found in Jesus!Today Jessica is 110% involved in her children's lives. She is an amazing mother who loves, provides for and supports her children. Being a single mother in recovery isn't easy. She works at it every day. She sets goals and does her best to accomplish them. She prioritizes her relationship with God. Without him none of this would be possible. She is almost two years sober and is excited for the future she is creating for herself and her family! We hope you enjoyed today's Sunday Spotlight!
